The following is a list of training interventions
offered by the Region V TACE to meet the needs of our constituency. To
best serve our constituents, the Region V TACE is constantly adding new
training topics and modifying current trainings to meet your training
needs. If you have a question about any of the topics listed below or
you have a training need that is not covered by these listed topics,
please contact the Region V TACE Director, David Adams at

Psychosocial and Medical Aspects of
Disability
Two or 3 ½ day program covering psychosocial and
medical aspects of disability. Participants will learn the functional
limitations that may be present with various disabilities, along with
implications for vocational planning. The target audience is counselors
who have not previously had a course on psychosocial and medical aspects
of disabilities. Format will be consistent with Problem-Based Learning
(PBL) style and will include lectures, case studies, plus small and
large group learning activities.
TACE 5 is in the process of developing a 12 part online course in this
subject area.
Team Building
1 ½ day program designed to help employees learn
strategies for team building, with the ultimate goal of improving the
workplace environment. Format includes mini-lectures, plus small and
large group learning activities.
Motivating Employees
This one-day program provides supervisors a variety of
strategies for motivating employees. Supervisors will practice
identifying and implementing strategies to motivate employees. The
target audience is supervisors with less than 3 years experience, or
those who may want a refresher on motivating employees. The format
includes lectures, large and small group learning activities, as well as
role-playing.
Ethical Practices in Rehabilitation
Region 5 TACE provides a 10 hour CRC credit course for
vocational rehabilitation professionals. The trainings, which takes
place over 1 ½ days, are designed to increase skills for dealing with
ethical issues encountered in the rehabilitation process. The format is
a combination of mini-lectures and problem based learning activities.
Ethics courses can be custom-tailored to an organization’s needs.
Courses can be web-based or in person, with content delivered in
multiple formats, including video and problem-based learning activities.
Unique to Region 5 TACE are our videos which we write and produce to
address specific learning objectives. Trainings are available for all
levels of VR professionals, from entry level workers through directors.
Use of Motivational Interviewing Skills
in the VR setting
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered,
directive method of brief counseling designed to enhance a client's
intrinsic motivation to change. TACE 5 has developed training to teach
VR staff basic MI techniques via face-to-face training, conference
calls, and web based asynchronous MI modules to reinforce learning and
application of skills. Training includes lecture presentations, group
discussion, video demonstrations, modeling of specific skills, practice
exercises, role playing, review of MI manuals, reading references and
on-the-job learning tools.
Due Process
This
online courseis designed to be used by anyone
interested in client advocacy through Due Process in vocational
rehabilitation. The course material includes videos and case examples,
plus a downloadable manual with detailed information on due process,
perfect for counselors and advocates about to enter the process for the
first time.
For Impartial Hearing Officers, we have specialized, in-person
trainings available.
For VR Consumers, we offer an online guide for clients who wish to
navigate the appeal process.
Working with Clients with Traumatic
Brain Injury
This one-day program helps participants learn about
challenges that may be faced by clients who have traumatic brain
injuries (TBI). The content of the training includes
medical-psychosocial aspects of TBI, job placement pitfalls and
solutions for clients with TBI, and behavioral interventions.
Participants will have access to online materials and case studies prior
to the training.
Mental Illness and Vocational
Rehabilitation
This 1 ½ or 2 day program provides counselors and
supervisors with information on severe and persistent mental illness and
the impact on employment. Participants will examine some of the
characteristics of mental illnesses, and develop potential strategies to
help maintain employment for persons who may be experiencing these
characteristics. The format includes lectures, small group learning
activities and case studies.
Client Choice and Vocational
Rehabilitation: Partners in Success
This is a one-day program to increase participant
knowledge and understanding of Informed Choice issues. Participants will
have opportunities to identify their negotiation style and share case
situations related to VR and Choice. Program includes discussion of
agency philosophy/policy on Choice.
Strategic Planning
Region 5 TACE offers consultation and facilitated
meetings to explore the future of an organization and to anticipate
opportunities and barriers that pertain to the company’s goals. Designed
for organizations both large and small.
Caseload Management
This on-demand
online course uses video, self-guided exercises and instruction to
improve caseload management skills. This self-guided course is available
for CRC credit.
This course focuses on:
- Obtaining a working knowledge of Caseload Management as it applies
to the VR profession.
- Understanding the impact of individual client casework on overall
caseload management.
- Defining critical thinking and how its use can minimize time loss.
- Examining how to work through time traps and develop your own time
management skills.
Comprehensive Assessment
1 ½ day training for VR professionals in a State VR
setting. This course encourages the creation of comprehensive
assessments that provide critical information for Plan development,
while encouraging the empowerment of Vocational Rehabilitation
customers.
Participants will:
- Understand the parameters of Comprehensive Assessment
- Demonstrate a knowledge of Ethics as they pertain to assessments
- Apply critical thinking strategies when planning assessments and
gathering client information
- Examining how to work through time traps and develop your own time
management skills.
Being Resilient in the Workplace
Being a VR Professional can be challenging at times.
Large caseloads, difficult client populations, the demands of paperwork,
and limited resources can take their toll. This 1 day training uses
exercises from the Positive Psychology movement to help the VR
professional develop strategies to deal with the demands of the job.
Foundations of Vocational Rehabilitation
This online course presents a historical background of
disability in the United States and how Vocational Rehabilitation has
reacted to and helped shape the experience of disability. A brief
on-line overview of American Indian VR is also offered.
Interview Skills
1 ½ day course for VR professionals who have no formal
counseling training, but who are working with consumers in a
non-counseling role. This training introduces basic counseling skills
and strategies for those who answer phones and perform orientation and
intake.
